Project Brief Draft

Lathan Minton

The Hammex is a hammock that can fold down from a brick column at school to give students a place to sit during breaks and outdoor classes.

We both quickly realized that we wanted to build some form of a hammock so that people could relax easier at school. This project takes advantage of Louisiana's nice weather by providing comfortable outdoor seating to students. Also, we were looking forward to the nice weather, so we decided to build In addition to providing a stress relief, this hammock can be used throughout the day during breaks, free study, and even outdoor classes. We chose to use the columns around the library because of how many there are around campus.

Existing hammocks offered inspiration and helped us understand construction techniques, so we could make something unique. We researched different types but were intrigued by the folding designs. The first small-scale model was based on this folding idea. We started off very complex in this model but ended up going simpler by the next few models. What we learned from these models was that hinges were going to be a key part for our project moving forward.

After this model, we shortly experimented with a cocoon form but after a few tests, we switched again because of its lack of stability. Next, we explored the idea of hanging our hammock from something stable like a tree or column.

Finally, we made a much larger scale model of the hanging design that attached to a wall-like structure. We had finally found our path. After this, we realized that it needed to be larger because it wouldn't fit a person comfortably, but yet still compact. This final model used a series of hinges to keep the components together and compact when folded against the column. As we came to an end we realized that there was much more we wanted to add and test, but due to lack of time, we were unable. We felt like there was much potential in our project and maybe one-day Hammex will be revived.
